ABOUT POCONO RACEWAY

Pocono Raceway is a 2.5-mile (4.02 km) tri-oval superspeedway located in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, in the Pocono Mountains region, roughly 90 miles west of New York City and 100 miles north of Philadelphia. Opened in 1971, it is one of NASCAR’s most unique venues and is often nicknamed “The Tricky Triangle” due to its unconventional three-corner layout.

Unlike traditional ovals, each of Pocono’s three turns features different banking and characteristics, inspired by three iconic circuits: Turn 1 resembles Trenton Speedway, Turn 2 is modelled after Indianapolis, and Turn 3 takes cues from the Milwaukee Mile. The banking ranges from 14 degrees in Turn 3 to 8 degrees in Turn 1, with just 6 degrees in the long frontstretch, placing a premium on car balance and driver adaptability.

Pocono Raceway has been a regular fixture on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar for decades, hosting its first Cup race in 1974. Over the years, it has also welcomed the Xfinity Series and Truck Series, while remaining a demanding test for teams due to its long straightaways, heavy braking zones, and unique setup compromises.

The asphalt surface, combined with high speeds and shifting loads, makes tyre wear, fuel strategy, and gearbox reliability key factors during race weekends. Pocono is also one of the few NASCAR tracks where teams must compromise between straight-line speed and corner performance more than anywhere else.

Beyond the main tri-oval, the facility includes an infield road course and extensive fan amenities, including large grandstands, premium hospitality areas, and expansive camping zones. With its distinctive layout and long history in American motorsport, Pocono Raceway remains one of the most challenging and recognisable tracks on the NASCAR schedule.
