TRAFFIC RULES IN PENNSYLVANIA

Heading to The Great American Getaway 400 is all part of the fun, but it’s worth refreshing yourself on Pennsylvania’s driving rules before making the trip. Most laws are similar to the rest of the United States, but enforcement can be very strict around major events and busy travel weekends.

Traffic flow

Just like most of the U.S., traffic in Pennsylvania travels on the right-hand side of the road. If you’re visiting from a country that drives on the left, take your time at intersections, when merging, and when exiting parking areas near the Raceway.

Speed limits

Speed limits vary depending on the road type.

  • Residential areas are generally around 25 mph.
  • Main rural roads are typically 55–65 mph.
  • Interstates may post limits up to 70 mph.

Always follow posted signage, as limits can change quickly near exits, traffic zones, and raceway approaches. Pennsylvania State Police regularly monitor speeds, and heavy penalties apply for excessive speeding.

Intersections & traffic lights

Traffic lights and stop signs are taken seriously.

  • Right on red is allowed after a complete stop unless a sign says otherwise.
  • Cameras may be used at certain intersections.
  • Always yield to pedestrians and do not try to rush through yellow lights if you can stop safely.

Alcohol & driving

Pennsylvania has strict DUI laws:

  • Legal BAC limit: 0.08% for drivers 21+.
  • 0.02% for drivers under 21.

Expect increased enforcement around race weekend. If you plan to drink, arrange a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare ahead of time.

Seat belt requirement

  • Seat belts are mandatory for all front-seat passengers.
  • Anyone under 18 must be buckled up, no matter where they sit in the car.
  • The simplest approach: everyone in the vehicle should wear a seat belt at all times.

Pedestrians & right of way

Drivers must give way to pedestrians at marked crosswalks and unsignaled intersections. At four-way stops, the first vehicle to arrive proceeds first; if vehicles stop at the same time, the driver on the right goes first. Around the Raceway, expect heavy foot traffic—slow down, be cautious, and stay alert.

If you’re stopped by the police

If an officer directs you to pull over, safely move to the right side of the road. At night, pulling over in a well-lit area is recommended. Keep your hands visible, follow instructions, and remain calm and courteous.
