Heading to The Great American Getaway 400 is all part of the fun, but it’s worth refreshing yourself on Pennsylvania’s driving rules before making the trip. Most laws are similar to the rest of the United States, but enforcement can be very strict around major events and busy travel weekends.
Just like most of the U.S., traffic in Pennsylvania travels on the right-hand side of the road. If you’re visiting from a country that drives on the left, take your time at intersections, when merging, and when exiting parking areas near the Raceway.
Speed limits vary depending on the road type.
Always follow posted signage, as limits can change quickly near exits, traffic zones, and raceway approaches. Pennsylvania State Police regularly monitor speeds, and heavy penalties apply for excessive speeding.
Traffic lights and stop signs are taken seriously.
Pennsylvania has strict DUI laws:
Expect increased enforcement around race weekend. If you plan to drink, arrange a designated driver, taxi, or rideshare ahead of time.
Drivers must give way to pedestrians at marked crosswalks and unsignaled intersections. At four-way stops, the first vehicle to arrive proceeds first; if vehicles stop at the same time, the driver on the right goes first. Around the Raceway, expect heavy foot traffic—slow down, be cautious, and stay alert.
If an officer directs you to pull over, safely move to the right side of the road. At night, pulling over in a well-lit area is recommended. Keep your hands visible, follow instructions, and remain calm and courteous.
